The North Carolina we know is a forward-looking beacon in the South, and leader in the nation.
Public education has been and remains the key to our children’s and our state’s progress.
John I. Wilson has been a linchpin in public education efforts over the past half century, a career that started in the classroom and led to advocacy in our state and nation’s capitals and across America.
He’s provided exemplary leadership, though in particular by supporting efforts and other leaders behind the scenes.
On the evening of September 19, from 5:30-7:30pm, in Raleigh, we honor him for his many contributions. In doing so, we also garner support for the work ahead, via State Legislative candidates who’ll continue the fight for public education in North Carolina.
Our invited special guests to-date include:
Hon. June Atkinson, Ph.D.: Former three-term NC Superintendent of Public Instruction, with one of the longest tenures in our state’s history. Dr. Atkinson is the product of public schools and former business education teacher whose career has focused on career and technical education.
Senator Dan Blue: Senate Minority Leader, former Speaker of the North Carolina House, and a past-President of the National Association of Legislatures. Blue grew up in four-room farmhouse in Robeson County, and is a product of the public schools (Valedictorian of his high school class).
Representative Rachel Hunt (candidate for State Senate): Hunt is the product of North Carolina public schools and the daughter of former First Lady Carolyn Hunt (a teacher) & North Carolina’s four-term “Education Governor” Jim Hunt.
In addition, we’ll be joined by a growing list of current and former elected officials, public education leaders, and candidates, including Now or Never NC’s alumni and 2022 endorsees.
